Dove Shooting in Argentina
For years, Cordoba has established the reputation as THE place to hunt doves in the world. There is no other place like it for dove shooting in Argentina because of many reasons. But the first thing that comes to everybody’s mind is the high-volume of doves with no limits.
Sierra Brava Lodge is 15 minutes from the Macha roost, which is the largest in Cordoba. Ten years ago there were an estimated 20 million doves in Macha and the number keeps growing every year. If you want to shoot 1,000 birds in a day, this is the place to do it. And you will probably see that shooting three to four thousand birds is definitely possible. Sierra Brava knows all the “honey holes” in the area and can set you up for an unforgettable high volume day. Just ask Jack Minter who shot 10,012 birds on 13,000 rounds in February 2008. Todd White experienced it again on January 2010, shooting 11,301 birds on 14,250 rounds. To top all records Randy Martin shot over 12,000 birds in one day in 2012, and also the same figure in Feb 2014. That was one unbelievable feat!!!
While many clients come visit Sierra Brava for the high volume doves in the area, there are many clients who love the challenge of the fast and high birds. Many of our English clients are amazed at how difficult it can be to shoot some of our very tall birds. As we hunt on 160,000 acres, the options are limitless if you are looking to challenge yourself with a certain type of shot.
The variety of the dove hunting at Sierra Brava is also ideal. Sierra Brava has 53 fields covering over 160,000 acres. Drives to the field from June-March are 15 minutes since all the shooting is done near the world famous Macha roost. The Macha roost is most well-known for the rolling green hills and of course extreme high-volume of doves. From March-May, Sierra Brava has the best fields in the north of Cordoba. Basically the doves leave the Macha roost during these harvest months and move out to the big estancias. Juanjo Sala’s father is the most prominent cardiologist in Cordoba and the large “feeding” estancias belong to patients of Dr. Sala. Therefore, many of these farms are leased exclusively to Sierra Brava. The concentration of doves in these flatland fields is awesome. The drives are 45-60 minutes away from the lodge.
Besides the birds, dove shooting Cordoba has many intangible advantages that are very important. First is the weather. It is sunny almost all year round as the shooting areas are mainly in a semi-arid environment. It hardly ever rains and the birds typically fly in the rain anyways. It is never too hot because the temperature always drops during the evenings. So even though we have air-conditioning at the lodge, it is probably used only 2-3 times per year. It is also very dry and there are no mosquitoes. In general it is perfect shooting conditions.
